i don’t really remember much of the later seasons of gilmore girls so excuse all the messing up of canon here
but imagine that the first time rory meets liz is after she’s had the baby or while she’s still pregnant, towards the end, emotional and extra crazy and finally settling in stars hollow.
but they’re in the diner and mom and luke are doing the flirting that just looks like arguing and rory is talking to liz because why not, because she’s been curious since she was seventeen, because she’s never forgotten the way that jess said “no, she doesn’t want me there.”, because she doesn’t let herself think about jess, but there are things that she can’t stop herself from thinking of either.
or maybe this isn’t the first time they’ve met, but it’s the first time that she’s having a conversation without her without anyone else talking too. (or maybe it’s post-series doesn’t even matter really that’s not the point)
but they’re talking and liz just slips it in, dopey smile on her face, dreamy tone to her voice, that yeah really “without tj and this kid, she doesn’t know what would have happened to her.” and other things along those lines, and she just keeps going, and rory doesn’t know what to say but she’s rory so she’s nice and polite, and it’s easy to think that she’s fine with what liz says when she’s really really not.
but she doesn’t bring it up because what good would that do, that might just hurt worse, make things even more terrible, but there’s a man out there who needed her once upon a time, who grew up lonely and without a parent to take care of him, who lives and exists and probably doesn’t need his mom anymore, hasn’t needed his mom in a long time, but did need her once. and here she is saying that her husband and new kid are the only reasons she has to live.
and rory hurts because of that for weeks after. lorelei gives her a hug, says i love you so much kid, and rory remembers everything that liz said, logan takes her out drinking and partying and she wonders for a moment how many nights little kid jess had to deal with his drunk mom. everything comes back to pain that she didn’t believe while she was in high school, but never forgot.
so she calls him, and tells him what liz said and she’s crying these quiet tears on the phone because she’s supposed to be stronger than this (this’ll probably be post balalaikas, but pre-series finale), she’s not supposed to cry over jess mariano anymore, but he just does his best to make her feel better, distracts her with books and talk of profit margins and how terrible writers are and how hypocritical he is since he’s a writer but she can’t seem to get out of this hole, keeps thinking about it, keeps being sad.
and in the end when she’s finally calmed down the tiniest bit, when she’s grabbing frozen foods to put on her eyes to bring down the swelling before she has to go out, when she’s planning everything she needs to do even while debating with him who even knows what, patterns and habits always so easy with them he finally responds to why she called.
"do you remember that night with the bracebridge dinner and the sleigh rides?" of course she does, but she just mhms and let’s him go on. “I said that she didn’t want me there. I wasn’t just talking about christmas.”
which stuns her into silence and rips her heart out all over, makes her think what he had to grow up hearing. she doesn’t have time to calm down before he says, have a good night, rory. and hangs up the phone.
